Thursday, 21 August: Round 3 of what is proving to be a fascinating duel between two of the world’s outstanding racers in Ski GP1 for the World title will unfold at the Mediterranean Grand Prix in Ibiza in September with France’s Jeremy Poret and America’s Chris MacClugage going head-to-head.
Two-time World Champion Poret leads the Championship standings with a 91 to 65 points advantage over multiple Champion MacClugage in third, has three heat wins to his rivals one, but they share Grand Prix honours one a piece, Poret climbing the top step in Qatar MacClugage in Milan.
Twice MaClugage has led and twice Poret has hit back to take the heat win, but MacClugage seems to be stronger in the second heat, leading from the start and staying out front, taking the win in Milan and but for a cruel last lap mechanical breakdown would have won in Qatar, taken the GP title and would now be leading the Championship. However, ifs and buts are all part of racing and who out of the two will have the upper hand in Ibiza is too close to call.
The rider who may well hold the key in the title race and cannot be counted out as a title contender is Portugal’s world number two Tiago Sousa.
Sousa, in second spot in the title race on 72 points, is quick and super consistent finishing second overall in Qatar and third in Milan. What was significant in Milan was that he got ahead of Poret at the start of heat 2 and stayed ahead of him!!
If Poret and MacClugage get caught up in their own personal fight Sousa could well deliver a knockout punch and spoil their party!
